April 9: Tunisia celebrates 86th anniversary of Martyrs’ Day

Tunis: Tunisia is celebrating the 86th anniversary of Martyrs' Day on Tuesday, April 9, in memory of its martyrs who fell on fields of honour to ensure a free, sovereign and prosperous Tunisia. In Bizerte, Gabes, Ben Arous, Sidi Bouzid and all over the country, ceremonies have been held to commemorate this landmark date in Tunisia's modern history. In Bizerte, the area around the martyrs' cemetery was busy with officials from the executive, security forces and veterans, all of whom came to take part in the salute to the flag ceremony. The Fatiha was recited in memory of the martyrs and a wreath of flowers was laid on their graves. The Governor of Bizerte pointed out that the commemoration of the glorious anniversary of April 9,1938 is a renewed call to respect, bravery and pride to be passed on to younger generations. In Sidi Bouzid, in the «Maryrs Square» a solemn ceremony was held to celebrate this date, in the presence of representatives of the regional and local authorities, several fighters from the National Movement and security formations, during which the Tunisian flag was flown high to the rhythm of the national anthem. In Ben Arous, an official ceremony was attended by local and regional officials, representatives of national organisations and military and security forces. In Gabes, the commemoration was similar, with a tribute paid to the martyrs and a wreath of flowers laid on their graves, followed by the recitation of the Fatiha and the salute to the flag ceremony.
