Accra: Mr Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has inaugurated a 23-member Inter-Agency Data Pricing Committee in Accra. The committee, comprising stakeholders from the digital space, aims to develop a roadmap that will lead to a reduction in the cost of data. The committee is expected to finalize its report and submit it to the Minister by March 6, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative seeks to assess current pricing models and propose recommendations for competitive and affordable data services that promote digital inclusion, economic growth, and national development. The Minister emphasized that the establishment of the committee reflects the government's commitment to ensuring transparency in data pricing mechanisms and bridging the digital divide. He stressed that the committee's focus is to evaluate data pricing and not justify the current price points.

The Minister noted that in January 2024, a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) proposed a 10 percent price reduction to the National Communication Authority, which has remained pending due to the ministry's lack of response. Mr. George reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring value for money, aiming for the best offerings for the Ghanaian people. He called for a comprehensive review of all bundle offerings across different networks.

Mr. George highlighted that affordable data could enable young Ghanaians to access job opportunities globally. He described the initiative as a call to national service for both the committee members and industry players. Mr. Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, welcomed the initiative as a way to ensure value for money and stressed the need to address the multifaceted issues related to data pricing. He pledged to meet the committee's terms of reference and deadlines.

Mr. Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, President of the National Union of Ghana Students, applauded the Minister for including the student union in the committee. He noted that many students face challenges with data costs during online sessions and research, expressing confidence in achieving fair data pricing for all.
