Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve: Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in illegal mining activities within forest reserves and water bodies. He referred to these individuals as 'thugs' and urged them to cease their activities immediately. "We are coming for you, you have a choice, you leave now, or we arrest you and your co-conspirators," Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah declared, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing this issue.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah made these remarks while addressing the media at the Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve in Anwiafutu, near Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District. Accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Security Council, led by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and officials from the Forestry Commission, he inspected a heavily illegally mined site where over 30 hectares of land have been destroyed.
During the visit, two Chinese nationals were arrested, highlighting the ongoing crackdown on illegal mining. The Minister revealed that President John Mahama had ordered officials to systematically target and capture those involved in illegal mining activities across forests and water bodies, seizing their equipment in the process. This initiative aims to restore biodiversity and rehabilitate affected areas.
Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah announced the seizure of 15 excavators and the destruction of other equipment that could not be moved. In the past week, another operation led to the arrest of seven Chinese nationals and eight Ghanaian accomplices involved in illegal mining at the Ankobra River. The Minister attributed these successful operations to the coordinated efforts of Dr. Amoakohene, the regional police command, and their teams.
He emphasized the government's commitment to legal mining, stating that pathways are being created for individuals interested in legitimate mining activities. The licensing process is being overhauled and decentralized to involve community leaders and regulatory authorities, ensuring that all activities comply with legal standards.
