Tunisia, EU reach pound 150 million agreement to speed up economic recovery

The European Union and Tunisia reached an agreement on Wednesday for a pound 150 million programme aimed at supporting the efforts undertaken by the Tunisian government to stimulate economic recovery. The programme focuses on enhancing public finance management, improving the business and investment climate, and fostering economic revitalisation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This European financial support is part of the Memorandum of Understanding on a strategic and global partnership between Tunisia and the European Union, concluded in Tunis on July 16, 2023. The MoU encompasses five key pillars: macroeconomic stability, economy and trade, green energy transition, people-to-people contacts, and migration and mobility. Under the first pillar of the MoU, addressing macroeconomic stability, this programme will be implemented through budgetary support. This entails a direct financial transfer from the European Union to the Tunisian Treasury to assist the Tunisian gover nment in its endeavours to achieve stable and inclusive economic growth for its citizens. The EU and Tunisia remain committed to working collaboratively to concurrently implement the five pillars of the MoU, addressing common challenges with a spirit of solidarity, mutual respect, and a partnership based on equality, emphasises the same source. As a reminder, on July 16, 2023, President of the Republic Kais Saied, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Italian Council Giorgia Meloni, and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte attended a signing ceremony of the aforementioned MoU on a strategic and global partnership between Tunisia and the European Union at the Carthage Palace.
