Tamale: Mr Joseph Ansah, Secretary General of Trades Union Congress of Ghana, has called for a total reset of the pay regime in the country. He stated that the current framework for wage determination was no longer fit for purpose, as it did not sufficiently reflect the prevailing cost of living and basic needs of workers and their families.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Ansah emphasized that resetting salaries and working conditions should go beyond mere annual adjustments of salaries and allowances. He made this call during a speech read on his behalf at this year's May Day celebrations in Tamale on Thursday. "It is obvious that Ghanaian workers cannot reset with these low pay levels," he said. "We cannot reset amidst this high level of pay disparities. It is energy-sapping and demotivating, to say the least."

Mr Ansah further advocated for replacing the current minimum wage with a living wage that considers the needs of workers and their families. Additionally, he urged the government to stop illegal mining in the country, stressing the need for a new approach that prioritizes environmental protection and responsible land use.

In response, Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, assured that the government is implementing measures to ensure that wages reflect the efforts, skills, and productivity of workers.
