Kumasi: The Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) is calling for action following a disturbing case of homophobic violence against a young boy, identified only as Kofi, in the Atonsu area of Kumasi.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement by Dr. Joseph Wemakor, CEO of HRRG, detailed that the alleged assault occurred between April 29 and May 1, 2025. During this time, Kofi was reportedly lured into a room under false pretenses by a group of young men. Once inside, he was subjected to an attack while the assailants filmed the ordeal, described as an attempt to 'beat the gay out of him.'
The statement further revealed that Kofi sustained severe physical injuries and has since been suffering from intense psychological trauma, which has led to multiple suicide attempts. His mother confirmed the events, highlighting the severe impact on her son and the fear now gripping their family. This incident is a reminder of the dangerous climate of intolerance faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.
HRRG is demanding urgent intervention from state authorities and civil society, calling for a thorough, impartial investigation to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable under the law. They also stress the need for immediate measures to ensure the protection and safety of Kofi and his family, including relocation and round-the-clock security if necessary, as well as comprehensive support through psychological care and legal assistance.
Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the organization emphasized that 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' HRRG warned that a lack of decisive response could send a dangerous message of tolerance for such hate-fueled acts. The group also invoked Archbishop Desmond Tutu's words: 'If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.' HRRG urged all stakeholders-government officials, law enforcement agencies, human rights bodies, and civil society organizations-to join in the fight for justice.
The statement concluded with a plea for collective support: 'Kofi's life hangs in the balance. He needs our collective support now more than ever.'
