Chiefs are indispensable in parliamentary democracy – Deputy Speaker

Mr Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has called on the Paramount Chief of the New Juaben Traditional Area to ask for his assistance in the celebration of Ghana's 30th anniversary of parliamentary democracy.

He emphasised the indispensable role of chiefs in parliamentary democracy, which placed the people at the core of the governing process.

Mr Amoako noted that it was incumbent on Parliament to keep chiefs properly informed about events and seek their support.

He added that in a democratic society, it was important for citizens to become deeply aware and get actively involved in understanding the principles of parliamentary democracy.

Ghana's parliament is celebrating a milestone of Ghana's parliamentary democracy with a year-long activities centred on the topic: '30 years under the fourth republic; The journey thus far.'

Mr Amoako said parliamentary democracy responded directly and promptly to public influence through elections and enumerated planned line of activities in the Eastern region, which included a peace walk, a football match and other fun games, and encouraged everyone to participate.

Daasebre Dr Kwaku Boateng III, the Chief of New Juaben Traditional Area, welcomed the Second Deputy Speaker and encouraged the public to fully participate in the celebration.

He said democracy offered an atmosphere in which human rights and basic freedoms were respected, and allowed people to express their views freely, adding that Ghanaians needed to protect and sustain this freedom.

Meeting between Prime Minister and Finance Minister focuses on state of public finances

Progress of government work focus of meeting between President Saied and Prime Minister

President Kais Saied met with Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani at Carthage Palace on Thursday afternoon to discuss the progress of the government's work.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, the meeting focused on the need to make progress in ridding the administration of those who have infiltrated it and have become an obstacle to the completion of all economic, social and other projects.

Many projects are ready, the funds allocated for them are available and all that is lacking is the sincere will to implement them, the statement said.

The President of the Republic noted that «the administration is full of highly qualified people, but many of those who refused to serve only the homeland and the state were excluded.»

Zimbabwe court reinstates opposition candidates

Zimbabwe's Supreme Court has cleared 12 candidates from the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change to contest in this month's general election, quashing a High Court ruling that they had registered after the cut-off time.

Four candidates from smaller opposition parties were also reinstated on the ballot, following the unanimous decision from the judges - but the reasoning behind the ruling has not yet been published.

The pre-election period has seen numerous court cases after the chaotic registration day on 21 June.

Candidates were registering late into the night, past the prescribed 16:00 deadline.

Dozens of candidates failed to register over payment and other logistical challenges.

The general election is due on 23 August.

Outcome of Parliament’s work at heart of meeting between President Saied and ARP Speaker

President Kais Saied met on Wednesday afternoon at the Carthage Palace with Speaker of the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP), Brahim Bourderbala, to discuss the outcome of the Assembly's work, which concluded its first regular session at the end of the past month in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 71 of the Constitution. In particular, they discussed the legislative function of the assembly and the dialogue sessions held with some government members. The President of the Republic stressed the need to combine all efforts in order to achieve the demands of the Tunisian people in life, justice and freedom and meet the various kinds of challenges facing the country. These challenges are the result of past policies, some of which are tantamount to crimes against the Tunisian people, and due to accelerated international fluctuations, which our people refuse to again fall victim to. Speaker of the Assembly of People's Representatives Brahim Bouderbala had announced on Monday that the seventh legislative plenary session held by the assembly on July 31, 2023 was the last session of this first parliamentary session, as stipulated by the requirements of Chapter 71 of the Constitution and the provisions of Chapter 77 of the rules of procedure. Brahim Bouderbala stressed that the parliament is invited before the start of the next session to develop a forward-looking action plan with clear goals and thoughtful mechanisms under the the Constitution and the law.
