Tunisia will receive, on February 27 at the Goulette Port, two vessels to monitor illegal fishing funded by Japan by means of ¥1.2 billion (about TND 25 million). Constructed under a donation project between the Tunisian and Japanese governments, these vessels will provide surveillance operations on the Tunisian coasts in response to national and international requirements, said the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in a press release on Thursday. The goal is to provide the Directorate-General for Fisheries and Aquaculture with the resources needed to monitor and surveil fishing vessels flying the Tunisian flag and improve the sustainable management of fisheries resources in Tunisian waters. A trial sailing of the vessels is scheduled, the same source added. The two 27 m long, 100 t surveillance vessels were scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2023, according to a JICA press release on April 2, 2023. This project will contribute to the achievement of Goal 14 'Management of aquatic life' o f the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the same source pointed out. Source: Agence Tunis Afrique Presse
