Violent Clash Between Military and Illegal Miners Results in 10 Deaths at Obuasi

Obuasi: A violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel guarding the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine's concession at Cote D'or, a well-known area in the mining town of Obuasi, has resulted in 10 deaths and numerous injuries.

According to Ghana News Agency, the incident occurred around 2200 hours on Saturday when armed illegal miners invaded the concession, destroying sections of its fence as they attempted to gain entry. The military stood firm in their defense, but their commander reportedly sustained a gunshot wound, prompting a retaliatory response.

The confrontation led to a gun battle between the military and the illegal miners, resulting in the tragic loss of life. Those injured are currently receiving medical care at the Obuasi Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

In response, the illegal miners have set fire to vehicles belonging to contractors of the mine, increasing tension in the Obuasi Township. The deceased have been taken to the morgue at the Obuasi Government Hospital as police initiate an investigation into the deadly incident.

Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency reports that AngloGold Ashanti is expected to issue a statement regarding the incident shortly.
