Citizenship Week: Dodihene advises students to ‘marry’ their books

Nana Amanano Mensah II, the Adontenhene of Dodi Traditional Area, has advised school children to concentrate on their books and learn hard for them to become responsible citizens for the country. He said education pays, so, there was no need for them to play around during and after school hours instead of learning. 'Have a goal, read at least three story books per term and learn to excel,' he said. Nana Amanano said these during the observation of the 2023 Citizenship Week celebration with students of St. Mary Theresa Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) at Dodi-Papase in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region. The Adontenhene urged them to read anything they laid their hands on and put whatever they learnt in school into practice since that was the best way to learn. He cautioned the schoolchildren, especially the girls to be morally upright, avoid early sex and bad company so they could stay in school rather than ruining their lives. Nana Amanano, who is the Chief for Poase-Cement said there was a need for behavioural change for the youth, who are the future leaders for Ghana in progress. The Adontenhene, who spoke on the theme: '30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy and Building National Cohesion: The Role of the Ghanaian Child,' counselled the students to be tolerant and accept divergent views for peace to prevail in the country. Nana Amanano explained that peace and tolerance were key ingredients of democracy, and their absence would cause the country more harm than good, stressing that being tolerant and respecting the rights of others was an important aspect of 'our civilisation as people in this 21st century.' He asked them to be involved in the governance processes of the country and not sit on the fence only to engage in blame games when things went wrong; adding that the days where manna falls from heaven for the Israelis to eat were over, so their involvement was needed. The Poase-Cement Chief also reproved the students to eschew wee smoking, tramadol, and alcohol intake as they could get mad. Mr Mustapha Zurukaneni, the Dodi-Papase R.C JHS Civic Education Club (CEC) Patron, commended the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for instituting the Citizenship Week celebration and on behalf of the student body pledged to share whatever they learnt with others. The NCCE introduced Citizenship Week as part of the Annual Constitution Week celebration in 2012. The Citizenship Week Celebration (CWC) seeks to remind basic school pupils of their responsibility as active citizens and their roles to build a strong, vibrant, and democratic Ghana. It also creates a platform for eminent personalities who are considered worthy role models in the society to interact and impart virtues of good citizenship to pupils across the country. The Kadjebi District Directorate of the NCCE marked 'Citizenship Week' with students in 32 basic schools in the district

In remembrance of 44th anniversary: Group re-emphasizes importance of June 4th

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the United Cadres Front (UCF) has re-emphasized the spirit and importance of the June 4, 1979, military revolution, ahead of the commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the historic event on Sunday, June.4, 2023. A statement signed by the Volta Regional Chairman of the UFC, Samuel Kwame Adabla and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said: 'On this special occasion of the June 4th uprising commemoration, the United Cadres Front, Volta, wishes to reiterate the importance of this day in our current democratic dispensation, the struggle for a better Ghana started and dated way back before independence in 1957. It said many heroes and brave men willingly gave up their personal freedom, families and even their lives to win that struggle. The blood of the brave-hearted forebearers was shed as if they are of no significance, yet the many that came after them remained not deterred. Their intrinsic firm resolve to see Ghana work was their inspiration to endure all manner of persecution without retreat. It said several attempts were made at achieving those dreams and though some failed in their quest, others pursued it to a successful end. There is a sharp decline in the rule of law. Independent institutions are now being interfered with and controlled by elements in government. There is no more social justice and equity as the poor are made poorer and a few closer to power are made richer by deliberate bad governance policies.' The statement observed that 'discipline has fallen to its lowest across all age groups and patriotism has been thrown to the dogs. Partisan politics has overshadowed our sense of patriotism and is now the fastest way of amassing personal wealth instead of serving the people.' The statement commended all the gallant men and women who stood up for mother Ghana amidst the quagmire of corruption, nepotism and injustice leading to the Revolution and worked hard to instil and imbibe into the citizenry the values of probity, accountability and transparency which were the tenets of the revolution.

Déguiche tells TAP: “All African continent will be in Hammamet”

There is keenness to support the efforts of the Tunisian National Olympic Committee in securing the successful conduct of the 2nd African Beach Games, slated to held next June 23-30 in Hammamet, said Minister of Youth and Sports Kamel Déguiche. This event will help promote Tunisia's image and increase its openness on its African environment. In an interview with TAP, the minister welcomed the organisation of this major continental multi-sport event which will bring together unprecedentedly 53 African countries and over 1,000 athletes. The event marks a return to the organisation of large-scale sports events some 20 years after the 2001 Mediterranean Games. "These games are a new challenge which requires the ministry, the Tunisian National Olympic Committee and all actors to pool efforts. Likewise, various State departments need to be involved to make of the games a success," Déguiche further said. "This multi-faceted event goes beyond the sporting and competitive dimension to involve the promotion of Tunisian tourism, the country's cultural heritage and natural products. This in addition to its ecological dimension. "We hope the event will be an opportunity to celebrate sports and competition and stimulate the whole region," the minister added," especially as "we rely on the contribution of young volunteers and civil society to make a success of these games." Kamel Déguiche expressed the hope to see Tunisian athletes stand atop the podium and bag the highest possible number of medals. That will be an unqualified success, he further said. Other beach events will hopefully be organised in Tunisia, considering the natural and weather features of the country which are conducive for the organisation of similar sports events throughout the year. "I am sure that we can excel in this area, notably as this will provide better visibility to encourage investment in sports." the Minister said. Déguiche laid emphasis on the contribution of the State to funding these games and the measures taken, in coordination with international authorities, to guarantee the smooth running of the competition under the best conditions. "The whole African continent will be here, in Hammamet," the minister said. African countries have always demonstrated keenness to participate in games hosted by Tunisia. The "record number of participants in these games reflects Tunisia's openness on its African environment. It also comes as "a reponse to a wave of attacks targeting our country to cast doubt on its good relations with African countries."
